What is 'The-Internet-of-Things'?
"By 2015 every man, his dog and even the collar will
be connected using mobile technology".
Noel Sesto, Control Freq Ltd circa 2007
The 'Internet-of-Things' (IoT) is not a new concept. It has been around decades, it's just that most people didn't, and perhaps even now still, don't know really much about it... Back then there was no need for us to know. It was all related to machine to machine communication (M2M). In the early days, it didn't directly relate to our everyday lives like it does now.
You can think of it as the 'Internet 'FOR' Things'...
The 'Internet-of-Things' is about everyday objects being connected to the internet. They respond to predetermined conditions or events and communicate that event, or a response to that event, to service users via some device like a watch, smartphone or app.
Let's say you sign up to a fitness service. You get the app, connect it to your watch and your watch monitors your heart, your blood pressure and temperature. These conditions are all transmitted to the app provider and presented in your app. This is 'the Internet-of-Things' in terms of consumer use.
It also has much wider commercial and industrial uses in applications like smart parking or smart farming.
